What is naloxone?
Naloxone (also known as Narcan) is a safe, potentially life-saving medication designed to reverse an opioid overdose. Opioids cause death by slowing then stopping breathing. Naloxone can reverse this effect within two to five minutes and may prevent brain injury and death. Opioid drug poisonings typically take 45 to 90 minutes to cause death. Delays of only a few minutes may mean the difference between life and death. Naloxone is available as both a nasal spray and an injectable.
