Lenawee Opioid Response Project

The Lenawee Opioid Response Project is a collaboration between the LSAPC and the Lenawee Health Network to coordinate a comprehensive, county-wide response to the opioid epidemic.

Since 2014, Lenawee County, Michigan’s drug poisoning mortality rate has increased from 6 to 23 per 100,000 population. The rate of opioid prescriptions dispensed in Lenawee County has exceeded the state rate for five years in a row and is 1.5 times the national rate. Additionally, the need for treatment is going unmet: Lenawee County is a HPSA Mental Health Shortage area and 85% of individuals needing addiction treatment in Lenawee County are not receiving it.

The Lenawee Opioid Response Project aims to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with opioid overdoses in Lenawee County by strengthening the organizational and infrastructural capacity of the LSAPC and the community to address prevention, treatment and recovery needs.

Core Project Activities include strengthening the LSAPC, conducting a detailed analysis, and developing comprehensive strategic, workforce, and sustainability plans. Supplemental Project Activities include building workforce capacity around Lenawee County’s peer recovery coaches, identifying evidence-based and innovative models or policy, tracking and monitoring data, and leveraging existing OUD efforts at federal, state and local levels.

In addition to the process and short-term outcomes associated with each of the above activities, the Lenawee Opioid Response Project has the long-term goal to reduce the incidence rate of opioid use disorder, the incidence rate of opioid overdoses, and the opioid overdose mortality rate in Lenawee County by 25% by 2025.
