WHEREAS, Overdose Awareness Day is recognized internationally on August 31 annually to raise awareness of drug overdose, the stigma associated with overdose deaths, and acknowledge grief experienced by families and friends remembering those lost and injured as a result of drug overdose; and,WHEREAS, Recovery Month is recognized nationally throughout the month of September to promote new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the strength and resilience of the recovery community and highlight the providers and communities that support recovery from substance use disorders; and, WHEREAS, in 2023, the State of Michigan mourned the loss of 2,931 lives to overdose—including 9 residents of Lenawee County—and experienced more than 28,000 non-fatal overdose-related emergency department visits, including 222 in Lenawee County; andWHEREAS, substance use disorders remain a significant public health concern, affecting individuals of all ages, races, and backgrounds, requiring a coordinated, compassionate response that includes prevention, treatment, and long-term recovery support; andWHEREAS, recovery is not only possible but achievable, offering hope and a healthier, more fulfilling life for individuals and families affected by substance use disorders; and we encourage family and friends to take preventative steps, recognize overdose warning signs, support access to recovery services, and help reduce stigma so those in need feel safe seeking help; andNOW, THEREFORE, the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim August 31st as National Overdose Awareness Day and September 2026 as National Recovery Month in Lenawee County, and call upon our community to observe these occasions.
